The International Development Law Organization was founded in Rome in 1983; originally called International Development Law Institute, its main task was providing technical assistance to developing countries. In 1998, the institute was refounded as an international intergovernmental organization to allow governments  to strengthen institutions to achieve justice, peace and sustainable development, a task that it still has.
