Job description: Human Rights Watch is looking for an Administrative Associate and a Research Assistant.

The Research Assistant will assist in the monitoring and reporting of human rights violations affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in the Middle East and North Africa (“MENA”). The main responsibilities are:
- Provide research assistance and administrative support to the Senior Researcher on LGBT Rights
- Develop contacts with government officials and other regional, national and local actors, including using pre-existing networks among rights activists and organizations to expand HRW’s monitoring capabilities and access to information regarding human rights abuses
- Assist the Senior Researcher in monitoring human rights conditions and documenting abuses by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including victims of abuses, local LGBTI communities, NGOs, media, and governments
- Assist the Senior Researcher in following up to verify specific cases of human rights violations
- Provide write-ups of interviews, and, when appropriate, first drafts of briefing papers, letters, news releases, submissions to international bodies, etc.; prepare written summaries and synthesis of research for incorporating into HRW publications
- Assist the Senior Researcher in preparing reports for discussion with governmental officials, NGOs and other external partners
- Be a full partner with the Senior Researcher in managing local logistical issues, such as finding drivers, fixers, and translators
- Advise the Senior Researcher on security issues, particularly in regard to research trips
- Assist with translations from English to Arabic and from Arabic to English;
- Travel throughout the MENA region, primarily with the Senior Researcher but with the possibility of some independent travel, to conduct research; travel internationally as appropriate to attend specific trainings or planning sessions
- Provide administrative support such as scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, taking minutes, processing expenses, creating agenda, preparing background materials, conducting follow-up to meetings, and providing written updates

The Administrative Associate will play a critical role in assisting the HR staff with a wide variety of general functions. The main responsibilities are:

- Maintain and update employee records in the Human Resources Management System (“HRMS”), electronic personnel record system and other relevant systems

- Ensure that all employee data, such as changes to contributions, distributions, and other benefit election data are entered and maintained accurately
- Extract and analyze data from one or more sources in order to provide effective reporting
- Assist with the implementation and global rollout of the HRMS
- Monitor the online HR helpdesk and respond to it, as appropriate
- Assist with auditing and paying monthly invoices and bills, including global health benefits and employee insurance reimbursements
- Assist with processing insurance changes related to unpaid leaves, FMLA, STD & LTD requests and forms
- Assist with the harassment prevention training process by sending requests and tracking completions

- Update and track onboarding materials, introductory periods for employees, insurance materials, policies, and employee handbooks
- Coordinate division meetings and other organization-wide events including Open Enrollment
- Assist the HR team on special projects


For the position of Research Assistant:

- A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in international relations, law, journalism, social sciences, gender studies or relevant studies is required
- A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. Previous work, internship, or volunteer experience on issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and human rights is highly desirable
- Demonstrated interest in human rights issues affecting LGBTI people in the MENA region is required
- Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required. Language skills in French are highly desirable
- Excellent computer skills and internet/social media research skills are required
- Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically, and excellent writing and editing skills are required
- Ability to make sound decisions consistent with function is required

For the position of Administrative Associate:

- A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, Psychology, Communications or a related field is required

- A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. Experience in an international setting and strong administrative coordination skills are strongly preferred

- Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required

- Strong computer knowledge including Windows, MS Office applications, Adobe Acrobat Professional and internet research are required. Intermediate or greater knowledge of Excel and the ability to quickly acquire new computer skills are required

- Ability to derive information from the database and present it in a clear and logical manner is required

- Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks with minimum supervision while maintaining accuracy and a strong attention to detail is required

- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all level of staff within the organization are required

- Excellent client service and support skills are required

- Good judgment, analytical skills, ability to solve problems creatively, and ability to maintain confidentiality are required

- Strong basic mathematical skills as applicable to calculating insurance premiums and compensation are required

- Strong oral and written communications skills in English are required; proficiency in another language is desirable

- Strong generalist understanding of HR processes and data, including eligibility and enrollment rules and benefit procedures is desirable

- Previous experience working as a Training or HRMS Assistant is highly desirable, specifically in regards to data management, analysis and reporting
