Imagine having dinner in Hell and Heaven. A banquet full of people around with their arms tied. Which do you think would make a difference between the two? In The Great Divorce C.S. Lewis described people in Hell as fighting against each other in order to reach for food, whereas in Heaven collaborating with each other, feeding the person on the opposite side of the table. Collaboration in fact has been the key point touched on by all the speakers in today’s Opening Ceremony of the International Careers Festival, celebrating its 10 th anniversary.
From 2009, the International Careers Festival has been the greatest opportunity offered to young people to practice collaboration in a multicultural environment. The Opening Ceremony was a celebration of diversity. As the Deputy Minister, Lorenzo Fieramonti stressed, “Diversity is a great ingredient of a good social life”.
Too often we act as if time and space have no boundaries. But in fact, time is limited and we should all pray for more. We should not sit down waiting for the change; we should be the change all together.
Collaborate rather than trying to stand out solo! The International Careers Festival is the perfect occasion to do so. In her speech, Wendy Wiver, first Counsellor and Bilateral and Foreign Policy at the British Embassy in Rome, remarked on the importance of preserving diversity and considering inequality a resource.
Participants can choose among four projects of the Festival according to their skills and interests. Internationalisation is the link among all the programmes. As Daniele Conte, President of the Giovani nel Mondo Association and Executive Director of the ICF said, “International means that we all are interconnected and affected by what is happening around the world”.
The original and most comprehensive programme among the four, the Rome MUN (Model United Nations), offers the opportunity to join a diplomatic simulation of the United Nations, one of the international organisation that mostly promotes diversity and demands for collaboration.
Secondly, the Rome Business Game, devoted to allowing young people to experience the world of business through case study competitions. Despite the competitive nature of the programme, participants are immersed in a collaborative environment in an effort to reach common solutions. Dr. Marco Giraldin von Lahnstein, director of the programme, suggested that in a company it is more important to focus on the human capital rather than on the economic capital.
Reporting during the Festival, the Rome Press Game participants get the chance to act as journalists and translators. Programme Director Shanti Kodituwakku Hettiarachchilage defined internationalisation as “breaking boundaries and making diversity a strong point in ourselves”. The last programme offering the opportunity to experience the multicultural aspect of the Festival is the International Careers Course.
Participants acquire and strengthen their soft skills through practical workshops, preparing for a successful international career.
The enthusiasm of the speakers who participated in the previous editions inspire us to be the change the world needs. Let’s be the Youth Leaders of Today!
