Organization: Created on 16 November 1989, the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity of the Council of Europe - more commonly known as the "North-South Centre" - was set up in Lisbon with the purpose to spread the universal values upheld by the Council of Europe – human rights democracy and the rule of law – beyond the European Continent. To strengthen the promotion of dialogue between North and South, foster solidarity and raise awareness of global interdependence, the North-South Centre was established as an ‘Enlarged Partial Agreement’ allowing non-Council of Europe member states to join. The mission of the North-South Centre is to empower civil society, in particular youth and women, through intercultural dialogue and global citizenship education, to play an active role in Council of Europe member states and neighbouring regions
Duty Station: Lisbon, Portugal
Open To: young people resident in one of the member states of the Council of Europe or in countries with which the North-South Center collaborates and who have never participated in other training courses or programs of the Council of Europe
Timeframe: the traineeships at the North-South Center usually take place in two sessions. The traineeship have a duration that varies from a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 months
First session: between January and June (deadline : 31 October of the previous year)
Second session: between July and December (deadline : 30 April of the year of the traineeship)
Job description: the main activities of the selected trainees during the traineeship period with the North-South Center of the Council of Europe are:
- assisting with the preparation of activities
- different types of drafting
- day-to-day administrative tasks
Qualifications: the qualifications needed to apply for a traineeship period with the North-South Center of the Council of Europe are:
- completion of higher education or successful completion of at least three years of university study
- very good knowledge of one of the Council of Europe's official languages (English and French) and a good knowledge of the other
- good drafting ability
Wage: not included, however, the North-South Center cover its trainees for medical and accident insurance during the traineeship period
