Alissa, a student from USA, chose GESAM Master to give a boost to her career. Here she tells us her experience and the raisons why she chose Cà Foscari University and Venice.
1) Why did you choose the GESAM Master?
As a student from the United States, I am constantly asked as to why I chose to move to Italy and participate in this Master. I chose to apply for the GESAM program for many reasons! The main reason I chose this program is because it is structured very different from more 'traditional' masters and I loved the fact that it combined intensive lectures and classwork with a study period at the ILO and included an internship which provides students with valuable work experience. I also chose this program as it is a great fit for my professional goals and previous experience. My undergraduate degree was in Business Administration with a focus on marketing and human resources. I have always wanted to pursue an international career and am also interested in public policy and the NGO sector. Therefore, I feel that the competences I have gained through this program along with my previous knowledge and experience has provided me a solid foundation to progress my career. Of course, I cannot forget to mention the amazing opportunity to live in Venice - one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
2) The Master GESAM faculty is composed of university professors, experts from NGO’s and both National and International Institutions, along with experts in social, economic and law fields.
Could you please share with us the best souvenir of your education received in the classroom?
I believe that the intensive classroom section of GESAM is structured really well and provides students with in-depth knowledge of a variety of fields and specializations. Everyday I learned something new from the professors and experts and found a new topic that sparked intrigue. Additionally, I greatly enjoyed learning about these topics in both a theoretical and practical manner as it provided insight into what a career in this arena would look like. It is difficult to name a single part that was my favorite as I feel that each session offered students something new, and therefore was able to sort of provide an education that fit each of our individual interests.
3) How has the Summer School experience in Geneva been?
The opportunity to attend lectures from officials at the International Labour Organization was incredible. It was a more in-depth time to learn about, not only the amazing work performed by such an important worldwide organization, but also to learn about topics in a very practical way that can easily be applied to my future career. The time in Geneva is also spent learning about and touring the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, further enhancing the knowledge learned during the classroom period. Also, the summer school allows the chance to experience life in one of the most international cities in the world and the chance to reunite with your classmates! This is obviously a top highlight of the GESAM program!
4) GESAM offers to student the possibility to do an internship in different realities, in Italy or abroad, in NGOs, Research Centers, Enterprises, Banks, and Institutions, thus building a personalized proposal for each student. How is / has been your internship experience?
I am currently interning for an organization in Bergamo, Italy called ADAPT - Association for International and Comparative Studies in Labour and Industrial Relations. This has been a perfect fit! I was interested in the association initially because I would like to pursue a career in public policy and social research through a non-profit or NGO and that is precisely what the organization focuses on. My time at ADAPT has been spent working on various projects including writing book reviews, researching for article contributions to the bi-weekly bulletin, proofreading and editing journal articles, and assisting with the yearly international conference. I have even had the opportunity to publish my very own work that was distributed in the bi-weekly international bulletin! The internship has increased my interests in subjects I previously did not have much knowledge on and provided with me international work experience - two crucial things for beginning an international career.
5) To whom would you suggest the enrollment to GESAM Master?
I believe that the GESAM program would suit a variety of students. I would say that any prior knowledge of the field of law would greatly benefit students as that is an important focus of the program; however, as someone who previously had little law exposure, the professors were able to explain the topics in an understandable way. I think that this master would be best for those with previous work experience as the topics are varied and can suit many passions and experiences while building on top of previous competences. Of course, anyone with a desire to begin an international career focusing on human rights, law, global institutions and corporations, or international relations would greatly benefit from this program.
