Job description: Ghent University has launched thecall for two PhD Scholarships for research at UNU-CRIS. If you are interested in doing research on subjects relevant to UNU-CRIS and would like to answer to this call, you have to find a supervisor at Ghent University, who is willing to supervise your PhD project. The scholarships are initially awarded for 2 years. After an intermediate evaluation, a second term of maximum 2 years can be granted. The aim is to obtain a doctoral degree within a time span of 4 years. Keep in mind that these scholarships are very competitive and that we are looking for outstanding proposals and excellent study results. Candidates from outside the EU will, in addition, have to verify if their diplomas and certificates are recognised as valid by the Belgian authorities. UNU-CRIS welcomes in particular proposals that fit one of its research programmes, but other proposals that relate to the UN and its goals could also be considered. UNU-CRIS will be happy to assist candidates with realistic chances for a scholarship in contacting potential PhD supervisors at Ghent University and to discuss suggestions for research proposals.

Wage/Fees: The amount of the scholarship is approximately € 2.070 per month, depending on the family status of the scholar. Based on the advice of the Research Council, a bench fee of € 7.440 (€ 310/month) will be awarded to the supervisor per term of 2 years.

The International Careers Festival opened its doors to the public, offering a wide range of possibilities. One of the many stands at the festival presented the Fulbright program, that offers scholarships to both Italian and American students, teachers and researchers to improve their English or Italian with abroad experiences.

This is administered in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and U.S. Embassy in Rome. Since the U.S. – Italy Fulbright Commission was established in 1948 more than 10,000 U.S. and Italian citizens have been awarded with Fulbright grants, nearly 70 people each year.

Many programs are provided both to Italians and Americans, they can be divided according to three different projects:

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program to Italy offers full grants to U.S. graduate students for study and research in the areas of arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences and technology at an Italian institution (i.e. university, research centre, library, archives and museums, or other institutions).

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program aims at strengthening English language and instruction at South Italian high schools by establishing a native speaker presence to provide a part – time assistance for 12-25 teaching hours per week to permanent teaching staff. American citizens are integrated in the host community and can gain experience from an intensive cross – cultural interaction. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends to Italy to lecture and/or conduct at Italian Universities at Research Centres for up to nine months. U.S. citizens can also apply for the Fulbright Inter – Country Lecturing Program, which is similar, but gives the possibility to visit a University in Europe (if the researcher is already studying in Europe).

Italian students can count on different projects, such as the Fulbright Italian Student Program, which enables Italian graduate students to apply for a scholarship for a Master or a Ph.D. in the United States: 7 scholarships are provided for all the disciplines ($38,000 as a maximum), one is provided for Law studies ($20,000) and two MBA scholarships ($100,000).

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program provides opportunities for young English teachers from Italy to improve their teaching skills while teaching Italian in U.S. colleges and universities.

Whereas students can apply for the aforementioned programs, Italian researches have the possibility to get in touch with the organisation for the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, that brings them to conduct research and/or lecture for up to nine months at U.S. Universities and Research Centres.

The last project is the Fulbright Scholar – in – Residence Program, which sends Italian scholars at U.S. institutions that might not have a strong international component (e.g. Historically Black Colleges or Hispanic – serving institutions).

In order to apply for the scholarship, Italian students must have at least a Bachelor degree obtained in Italy, a good knowledge of English (the level depends on the chosen American University) and the student must have already sent the application form for an American University (there are no limitations, as long as they are part of the American university system).

Qualifications:

- you have been (provisionally) admitted to one of the qualifying UT graduate programmes

- you comply with the conditions for obtaining an entry visa in the Netherlands (if applicable)

- you comply with the general English language test requirement Academic IELTS 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT of 90) and an additional 6.0 (TOEFL iBT 20) on the subscore of speaking skills

- you are not eligible for a Dutch study grant

- you have completed a pre-master at the University of Twente (if applicable)

Wage/fees:  Scholarship value: € 6,000 - € 25,000 for one year (approximately 30 scholarships available). If you have applied for a two-year programme, make sure you read the information about two-year study programmes  

 

Application process:

Application for UTS academic year 2017/18 will be possible by the end of 2016.  You can only be awarded with one UT scholarship. You have to include a motivation letter in your application (250 – 500 words). This motivation letter explains: what you have studied in the past; what goal you want to reach through your study at UT; how you plan to receive this goal; why you particularly choose to study at the University of Twente
