The International Careers Festival opened its doors to the public, offering a wide range of possibilities. One of the many stands at the festival presented the Fulbright program, that offers scholarships to both Italian and American students, teachers and researchers to improve their English or Italian with abroad experiences.

This is administered in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and U.S. Embassy in Rome. Since the U.S. – Italy Fulbright Commission was established in 1948 more than 10,000 U.S. and Italian citizens have been awarded with Fulbright grants, nearly 70 people each year.

Many programs are provided both to Italians and Americans, they can be divided according to three different projects:

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program to Italy offers full grants to U.S. graduate students for study and research in the areas of arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences and technology at an Italian institution (i.e. university, research centre, library, archives and museums, or other institutions).

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program aims at strengthening English language and instruction at South Italian high schools by establishing a native speaker presence to provide a part – time assistance for 12-25 teaching hours per week to permanent teaching staff. American citizens are integrated in the host community and can gain experience from an intensive cross – cultural interaction. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program sends to Italy to lecture and/or conduct at Italian Universities at Research Centres for up to nine months. U.S. citizens can also apply for the Fulbright Inter – Country Lecturing Program, which is similar, but gives the possibility to visit a University in Europe (if the researcher is already studying in Europe).

Italian students can count on different projects, such as the Fulbright Italian Student Program, which enables Italian graduate students to apply for a scholarship for a Master or a Ph.D. in the United States: 7 scholarships are provided for all the disciplines ($38,000 as a maximum), one is provided for Law studies ($20,000) and two MBA scholarships ($100,000).

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program provides opportunities for young English teachers from Italy to improve their teaching skills while teaching Italian in U.S. colleges and universities.

Whereas students can apply for the aforementioned programs, Italian researches have the possibility to get in touch with the organisation for the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program, that brings them to conduct research and/or lecture for up to nine months at U.S. Universities and Research Centres.

The last project is the Fulbright Scholar – in – Residence Program, which sends Italian scholars at U.S. institutions that might not have a strong international component (e.g. Historically Black Colleges or Hispanic – serving institutions).

In order to apply for the scholarship, Italian students must have at least a Bachelor degree obtained in Italy, a good knowledge of English (the level depends on the chosen American University) and the student must have already sent the application form for an American University (there are no limitations, as long as they are part of the American university system).

Today Fulbright stand at the International Careers Festival has been very crowded because of the many opportunities that offers, so be quick to apply for your scholarship!
